moving mountains

Back in 2013 I wrote about the fossilized tree stump cemented in the center of campus. For the last few months workers have been carefully extracting it from its cement prison so it could be moved to make way for a sidewalk. Today the excavation was complete. Crystal and I headed to the site with our cameras. Marie and Michael Slone went, too. We waited for some time, but nothing happened. They spent more time rearranging the giant bags of popcorn than anything. Finally, Crystal and Michael walked off for coffee, and just like lighting a cigarette and the food arrives, they began to move the stump to its custom-made, popcorn lined truck bed. Marie and I were told it’s being relocated to a nearby location (for those on campus it’s going to a spot between the Boone Center and Mines and Minerals Building). I’m hopeful they won’t set it in concrete again, but we’ll see. I’m really glad it’s staying on campus. Visitors seem to enjoy it.
