Tucked away in a far dark corner of the Cathedral Basilica stands this statue of Mary. I call it ‘Mary on the half shell’ because of the backing sculpture piece. Of all the statues of Mary in the Basilica I think I like this one best, perhaps because of the muted blue hue. I find it soothing. Near her sits a holy water dispenser (below). I have never seen such a thing, but I’m not Catholic, so maybe holy water dispensers are normal. Does one fill water bottles or….what? What would one use holy water for exactly? I only know it in the context of how a priest might use it, so I’m unclear as to how the general public would use it. I’m hoping one of Catholic friends will school me on holy water dispensing. In any case, I rather enjoyed this corner of the Basilica. I found things like the dispenser that I didn’t see during my first visit. I love an adventure.
