If you concentrate on finding whatever is good in every situation, you will discover that your life will suddenly be filled with gratitude, a feeling that nurtures the soul.

Two years ago today I went to London, England. I met Kiya Heartwood at Heathrow, and off we went to the best week of my life. There hasn’t been a single day that I haven’t relived that trip. I continued to reminisce as I handed over my Girl Scout cookie money to this year’s pusher, Catherine Brereton. Coincidentally, she’s British. Her soothing accent was perfect timing, to be sure, but there’s far more to her than being a happy reminder. Catherine’s smart as a whip with a quick wit to match. She is a Gaines Fellow in Creative Writing at UK (that’s University of Kentucky, not United Kingdom). She graduates in May, and was just accepted into the masters program, also at UK. In the meantime, she’s gotten the attention of some well known Kentucky authors and publishers. As Catherine’s star begins to burn brighter, I’ll just apply the sunscreen, watch her wow the world with her talent, and hope that when she makes it big she remembers the Thin Mint junkie with a camera.
