“Try to make at least one person happy every day. If you cannot do a kind deed, speak a kind word. If you cannot speak a kind word, think a kind thought. Count up, if you can, the treasure of happiness that you would dispense in a week, in a year, in a lifetime!” ~ Lawrence G. Lovasik

beside myself (snapseed)

In the evenings, there’s this strange thing that happens when I walk from the office to the car. About a month ago I began to notice two, sometimes three, shadows walking with me. It was actually the sound that first got my attention, or the lack thereof. Generally, I’m not alone on the sidewalk. Footsteps are not uncommon to hear. I kept seeing this shadow just out the corner of my eye, but I heard no footsteps. It got closer, and I still heard nothing. It got close enough to pass me, and that’s when I turned to see who it was, only to find no one there. Of course, that’s when I realized it was a bit of an optical illusion created by these streetlights, and even the lights in the parking garage, as seen in this photo. I don’t know why I have never noticed this phenomenon before. Maybe it didn’t used to happen. Maybe the University changed all the bulbs, and now we have special bulbs that do wonky things like this, I don’t know. I’ll say this though: I never feel alone, and from now on I’ll giggle when someone says, “I’m beside myself,” because I really am, at least in the winter evenings.
