I picked up what was left of Mamaw’s wood floor to be planed and reused. It was the first time I’d been home since the house was dismantled. Words don’t suffice for a town that is slowly disappearing. 100 year old homes turned to empty lots sit adjacent to a blue tarp here, a collapsed roof there. But mostly, places are just gone and they’re not coming back. Just about the only thing left is my five-year-old signature from 1970 in the sidewalk. On the other hand, the Freezer Fresh has almost been rebuilt. So, that’s a positive.
