“My advice to you is not to inquire why or whither, but just enjoy your ice cream while it’s on your plate.” ~ Thornton Wilder

There’s a small chunk of chain link fence downtown between Lowell’s and Third Street Stuff. Dozens of locks have been fastened to it. Most are ordinary, but some have been adorned with paints and other accessories. I’m sure it has a name and significance though I don’t really know what they are. I do, however, suspect it’s a take off on the Love Locks made popular in Paris. As this article from 2015 states, the trend apparently started in Rome ten years prior but it really took off in Paris. Some of the city’s bridges, particularly the Pont Des Arts bridge, began to suffer structural strain from the weight of hundreds of thousands of locks. Our Lexington nod to Love Locks isn’t near as fatal, at least not yet. Love the World: my favorite message.
