Art is not to do with the practical side of making a living. It’s to live a fuller human life.” ~Henry Moore

the first

This is the first apple to appear on my Jonathan apple tree that I set out in 2009. My paternal grandparents died nine days apart that year. He went first. In lieu of flowers, my co-workers gave me a $100 gift certificate to a local nursery. I bought a fruit tree for each of my four grandparents. I named the peach trees after my grandfathers – Thornton Terry (age 93) and Orville “Bodine” Adams (age 88). Neither have carried fruit full term (peach trees, I have found, are unusually susceptible to disease…and squirrels). The apple trees honor my grandmothers. The Jonathan honors Hazel Prater Terry (age 93), and the crabapple belongs to Hannah Hamilton Adams (age 98)  because she made the best crabapple jelly this side of heaven. She is the last to bare fruit. I have no doubt that it will be worth the wait.

This first doesn’t just belong to the apple but to the picture itself. BFF Crystal Heis tried to tell me to buy a Canon 50mm lens months ago. Last week, when I finally met Ian Davis in person, he, too, urged me to buy the very inexpensive lens. So, I did. And this is the first shot. I don’t have buyer’s remorse in the slightest.
