I've played drums so long I can't really remember a 'starting' point. My parents knew right away that
I wanted to play - I beat the furniture to pieces, pots and pans were laid waste, the silverware suffered unimaginable
torture. My grandmother cooked with lard at the time. Those lard buckets held the beating frenzy longer than anything but even
they fell victim eventually. My poor mother tried to soothe me with a small tamborine when I was four (I still have it) but it
didn't provide the sound I heard in my head. She tried a small set of bongos (I still have those, too) when I was six but, they, too,
fell short of my expectations. I went through a series of J.C. Penney starter sets but their paper heads were no match
for my slamming prowess. As a last ditch effort, they gave me a blue sparkle snare drum when I was eight but that
only added fuel to the fire. "How can you have a snare drum without a whole set?" I asked. "That's like a horse with three legs!" It wasn't
marching band I wanted - it was rock-n-roll. It
that was my mother's fault, what with her Beatles, Elvis, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, and Tom Jones records in the house.
By the time I was 10 I had worn my parents down. For
a $110 at a local antique store, they bought a five piece off-brand drum kit with real drum heads that were meant to be played. No wonder my parents are both hard of hearing now.
Over the years I've appeared on recordings by Bliss McCain The Kelly Richey Band Wishing Chair and a few tracks
here and there for people I don't even remember (though I'm sure I had a fabulous time).
In fact, my discography is below (which does help me remember a few things), starting with my very first recording; a gospel 8-track (that's sure to give away my age)!.
I made my best recordings in the 90's with two bands no one has ever heard of; U.S. 27 and La Vida Loca (Pete Poggione [gtr, vox],
Sean Tarter [bass, vox], Sylvia Walters [lead vox], and Jay Goldenberg [gtr, vox]). Those
recordings have never been released.
People often ask me why I stopped being a full-time player. Two reasons really. 1- my health and 2- my bank account, or lack thereof.
But I would no more leave my first love than I would stop breathing...but I might hold my breath for a little while!
By the way, I have almost no photographs from the billions of gigs I've played nor do I have all the publicity pictures ever made.
If you happen to have photographs from live gigs, weird publicity pix (these are probably from Germany or Japan), or just around the show/backstage photos I
would love to see them kopana.net
