Every photograph you see is also a portrait of the photographer you do not see.

This is my wallpaper. Not wallpaper in my house, thank heavens, but in my hotel in Washington, DC. It’s a lovely hotel, very Irish and the people are extremely kind, but the wallpaper isn’t quite my cup of tea. Worse than the wallpaper is the incredibly sad number of homeless people at Union Station nearby. This morning, as people shuffled hurriedly during rush hour, one man lay sleeping on the sidewalk covered head to toe in a white blanket as if he was nothing more than discarded trash. Beggars panning for coins were everywhere. I wonder how life manages to go so desperately wrong that a blanket becomes a man’s only possession; a hot sidewalk his bed. I am so grateful that my life took a better turn, and I will pray for those men and women less fortunate. Sleep well tonight my friends. Life could sure be worse.
