I was invited to a wonderful lunch at Keeneland with Becky Ryder and Shell Dunn. The September yearling sales are on: the same sale I first worked back in 1997 where I met two of my best friends in all the world, Maggie Jacobs and Sharon Shearman. I loved the excitement then, and I still do. It’s like a bizarre fair where beer and horse poop replace cotton candy and the ferris wheel (that’s completely weird, I know, just go with it). This year there’s also the inaugural sporting art auction. The 2D works were packed onto the sales pavilion walls, and the 3D works scattered throughout the dining hall. The collection includes an exquisite Andrew Wyeth – the tiny hawk qualified it as ‘sporting’ I suppose, but who cares? it’s Wyeth and it’s gorgeous – and a Mary Cassatt (yes, that Mary Cassatt) titled ‘Children Playing with Cat’….because who doesn’t think ‘sport’ when they see a cat? The auction is lovely, and there are some beautiful paintings and sculptures among the offerings. For me, though, nothing compares to the real thing. The horse: God’s most majestic creation. Bringer of calm and understanding. Communication and respect.
