A storm began to roll through Lexington this evening. Wally and I went outside to watch the storm clouds roll overhead and feel the cool breeze. I was doing some pano shots on my iPhone when lightning flashed. The bottom photo was the result. I kept doing panos. It kept lightning. Every image in progress during a strike had similar streaks. If I didn’t know it was lightning I would have thought it some weird software glitch. In the end, the storm wasn’t much, but Wally and I enjoyed the lightning.

“Our time here is magic! It’s the only space you have to realize whatever it is that is beautiful, whatever is true, whatever is great, whatever is potential, whatever is rare, whatever is unique, in. It’s the only space.” ~ Ben Okri

Craggy Gardens

It rained much of the day. Not a deluge like they’ve had in Western North Carolina recently, but a slow, gray drizzle. However, by late afternoon, the sky got interesting. We ascended the Blue Ridge Parkway. I did a little HDR bracketing and talking to God. The air smelled heavenly, the temp equally perfect, and some of the rhododendrons were even still blooming. There just wasn’t enough time to soak it all up, but I did the best I could. I could never get tired of such majesty. Mercy, our blue planet is gorgeous.

I said today was going to be a tumultuous weather day. Lexington has been spared, so far anyway, but north of here got slammed pretty good. Boy, it sure made for a beautiful sky when I left work, and it was so nice to see the students studying out in the sunshine. I feel sorry for them. They’ve been stuck inside for months. Today was the first day it has been really warm enough to bask in the sunshine. Of course, they’ll be back inside tomorrow what with the forty degree drop overnight. Nevertheless, here’s to basking in warmth and staying out of harm’s way.

rainy days and Mondays (snapseed)

Sometimes, when the clouds are just so, the light just right, the puddle just deep enough, sky and pavement combine to make something confusingly beautiful. Beauty is sometimes in the strangest places, isn’t it?

I’m sure this photo captures the mood of the Big Blue Nation (BBN) this evening. If you’re unfamiliar, I’m talking about the University of Kentucky men’s basketball team. UK has one of the winningest programs in the country, and for as long as I’ve been alive, it’s been the closest thing to a pro team the state has ever had. UK played a great game against UNC for the regional bracket this evening. It was a down to the wire scream at the TV till the neighbors could hear me kind of game. I’m sorry we came out on the losing end, but it was a wonderful exhibition and both teams should be very proud. It’s nice to see players that don’t give up. Team sports teach a lot about how to be good people, and play well with others in every aspect of life. There’s always next season, and I’ll always root for the alma mater. #BBN Go Cats!

Flying home Sunday evening while the full Hunter’s Moon watched overhead provided some delightfully beautiful moments like this shot flying out of Chicago, and the shot coming into Lexington. I had a brief talk with David Campbell today about the joys of night photography. So, I thought I’d post some night shots from my iPhone. They’re noisy, too, but who doesn’t love city lights from above? That light pollution is a real drag, but boy it has some beautiful perks.

Grand Canyon

I’ve had a migraine for two days. I was so sick with it this morning that I almost didn’t catch my flight to California. But, I received a prayer from my sweet daddy and that made it bearable. I began to look forward to seeing the western landscape that I’d not seen in far too long. By the time we got to Kansas, the skies were overcast, and they stayed that way for the rest of the flight. They parted just enough to see this stupendous sight, and if you look real close at the little ray of sunshine near the top, you’ll see part of the Grand Canyon. It is something to behold from 35,000 feet. Then, as the San Gabriel Mountains opened up to a sea of streets and buildings that stretched as far as the eye could see, I had the strangest feeling of ‘home.’ I spent so much time in LA in the late 1980’s that I felt like I was coming home. Beautiful California, oh how I’ve missed you.

A few weeks ago while I was photographing Ruth Bryan’s jazz band the sky was roiling with thunderheads. I could get used to photographing clouds. Only clouds. They’re incredible: their shapes, colors, heights, everything about them is fascinating. So, I’ll just leave this thunderhead here for you to enjoy with me because who doesn’t love watching a storm roll in with a friend?

summertime (snapseed)
summertime (snapseed)

I had the best summertime evening. The clouds cast beautiful shapes across the deep blue sky, and the yard – my private fenced-in yard – was begging me to sit in it. Me and Wally love our fenced yard, but not nearly as much as we love a fine summer evening together. But you know what made my day perfect? This guy right here.
