Nobody can go back and start a new beginning,
but anyone can start today and make a new ending

It’s a great day when I get a postcard so, I’m not sure what to call today. The first thing I read was a postcard from Brett, Lisa, and Jackson “Cincinnati Red” Bick, “I heard you liked postcards...” That just made my day, and it’s my first postcard from them: double bonus. A perfect handmade hat by my old friend Debra Bays, whom I haven’t seen in a month of Sundays, came springing from a yellow package. I put it on. I may never take it off. Its colors were custom made for me. My smile widened. The white envelope was heaviest. Inside I found two classic, colorful postcards both with outhouse themes, and two negatives, also of outhouses. Dan Kibler knows how to instantly put a smile on my face. Postcards and outhouses? He really outdid himself this time. I know it doesn’t look like I’m speechless, but I am. I’m overcome with gratitude. And my cheeks hurt from smiling!

your daddy’s outhouse

For years Dan Kibler has sent kookie things to me in the mail. Back in the early 1990’s, when I was watching Ren and Stimpy a lot, I’d get packages filled with Ren and Stimpy stuff, like straws, wind-up cars, or trading cards. He was working at a video store at the time, so he would throw in a VHS of some great, but obscure, movie every now and then. It was always Christmas at my house. Dan no longer works at the video store, and I haven’t seen a Ren and Stimpy episode in probably 20 years. That hasn’t stopped him from playing Santa. Now, he sends photos of outhouses. Last week I got a whopper of a package with three negatives (above). Perfectly grown men in ties taking pictures of each other in outhouses. Those guys know how to live! Next time you see an outhouse, stop and take a picture of yourself with it. You know where to find me.

Difficult times have helped me to understand better than before, how infinitely rich and beautiful life is in every way, and that so many things that one goes worrying about are of no importance whatsoever.

A few weeks ago I got a package from Dan Kibler. He goes to a lot of estate auctions and likes to send me little outhouse jokes. This gift was no joke. In fact, I nearly fell over when I realized who it is. Ann Nipper and I used to regale Dan with our recitation of Coal Miner’s Daughter, virtually word for word. Most people wouldn’t watch the movie with us because we knew it so well, and neither of us could keep our mouths shut. Poor Dan learned the hard way. That was nearly 25 years ago and he still remembers how much I love Loretta Lynn. Plus, it’s a dang awesome photo. I don’t know what I did to be blessed with such a wonderful gift, but it sure put a smile on my face.

I came home to a gift for the outhouse. Once again, Dan Kibler has passed on to the collection this fabulous treasure. It reads, ‘Hy-Klas Photo Service, August 13, 1936‘. I laughed out loud, partly because of the picture, but also because of the name Hy-Klas. Earlier, I was surrounded by many people at work whom I adore, who make me smile and laugh everyday, like crossword puzzle creator and ace metadata librarian, Kathryn Lybarger, below. She has created a crossword puzzle based on cataloguing terms. Call me a nerd, but I was excited about it. An old picture of a dude sitting in his outhouse and a crossword puzzle about cataloguing; how much better can the weekend start than this, I ask you?  It’s Hy-Klas, and I’ll be smiling into Sunday.

You must understand the whole of life, not just one part of it. That is why you must read, that is why you must look at the skies. That is why you must sing and dance, and write poems, and suffer, and understand, for all that is life.” – Jiddu Krishnamurti

outstanding outhouse (snapseed)

When Dan Kibler’s not out finding the rarest, coolest art around (think LeRoy Neiman, for example), he’s busy writing killer pop songs with hooks big enough for a whale. In the mail today came a t-shirt printed with the cover of his latest CD (a photo by yours truly). Tucked inside was this negative of an unknown woman standing inside an outhouse. It gave me a great, big belly laugh. I’ve added it to the outhouse’s growing fan collection.
