“Remember, that of all the elements that comprise a human being, the most important, the most essential, the one that will sustain, transcend, overcome and vanquish obstacles is – Spirit!” ~ Buddy Ebsen

mentor of greatness

Marietta Watts is by far one of the best people on this planet. She is wise, wise, wise, wise, with bottomless compassion and a innate desire to understand people. I’ve probably said this all before but it bears repeating because she’s just that special. This afternoon, she gathered the newest class of Humanity Academy folks together with some of the graduates. We had a really informative discussion on Social Media Activism where I learned a lot of new lingo, along with some disturbing trends. But ya know, I was sandwiched between Marietta and BFF Heidi Morrow and that made even the most unsettling revelation okay. Heidi and I graduated HA together in 2009 so we declared today our 10 year anniversary. It was good for my soul to catch up with her joyous self. And Marietta, well, any day with her is a day with sunshine. Come to think of it, I’ve never spent a single bad day with any Humanity Academy. I am a fortunate woman indeed.

Santa Claws (snapseed)

It was grocery night in preparation for Thanksgiving. I had put it off as long as I could. The first thing I saw when I walked in was Santa Claws. I really did laugh out loud. It’s such a “me” sweater that I was tempted to buy it. I bought a bigger ham instead. Holiday or no, I generally dread going to the grocery. The funny sweater helped take the edge off, and then I heard, “Oh good. I need a hug.” I’m sure there was more, but that’s all I heard. It was Heidi Morrow headed toward me in the deli. What a compliment that was, huh? Made my day. We had a lovely chat between the cakes and olives, and shared another hug before parting. Moral of the story? If I saw Heidi and ugly Christmas sweaters every time I went to the grocery, going to the grocery wouldn’t be so bad.

I look in my rearview mirror this morning and who should I see smiling and waving? Heidi Metzger Morrow! I knew in that moment I was going to have a great day. Soon, she turned left and I turned right, exchanging I love yous through the windows as we parted. It was indeed a great day and it started with a smile from an old friend. Sometimes that’s all it takes.

The Family Morrow
The Family Morrow

Lunch with The Morrow’s was a highlight today. As we were preparing to leave, Riley, from his mama’s arms, reached for me (he’s never done that) and hugged and hugged and hugged. And when he let go, he tenderly kissed me on the lips (he’s definitely never done that). I love that little boy to the moon and back. I love his mom and dad, too. What a wonderful start to the year.

fun in the sun

What a beautiful boy Riley Morrow is becoming. With two of his 10 teeth beaming like the sun, our boy celebrates an equal number of months on this planet. (as daddy Eric Morrow points out, enlarge the photo and you’ll see his little fangs, too) He’s far less enamored with the camera than when he was at a wee six months, however. Getting that happy smile takes a bit more effort, but with my stunning assistants, Uncle Biscuit (Joel Scott) and Aunt Stacy (Yelton), it was a short lived problem.
