This Blackberry Winter hitting Kentucky is so cold it turned my red peonies snow white. We’ve already had Dogwood Winter this spring. Are there any more winters to be had after this? I sound like I’m complaining, but the truth is I love this weather.

I’ve always heard that peonies fair best when there are ants crawling about. My peonies have always done well, and they have always been covered in ants. Coincidence? A better gardener than I would know. My Siberian Iris, which I mistakenly called African Iris a few posts back, really love Blackberry winter. Maybe that’s why they’re called Siberian Iris. A day of sun makes my gardens all the more beautiful.

I was able to walk around and see the beautiful blooms like this gorgeous white peonie. Meanwhile, mom stood in the doorway and took pictures of me taking pictures. This after she came running into the house like a little girl about a good sized garter snake in one of the gardens out back. She’s very funny about snakes. She’s very funny period. She’s been a good nurse.

A lovely shower kissed the world into color this afternoon. One of my African iris – gifts from Crystal and Elaine Heis – bloomed just before the rain. Those little rain drops perched delicately on the leaves so that I couldn’t resist a photo. The white peonies are ready to pop as well. They were a gift from Stacy Yelton who shared them from her yard where beautiful peonies abound. I don’t normally photograph so much foliage and flowers, but there’s something so beautiful about this year that I just can’t resist. Hope you don’t mind looking at pretty things every once in a while.
