Today, I was in Berea for the Berea Craft Fair. It’s held each July about three miles outside of town at Indian Fort Theater. This is also where the trail head to Indian Fort Mountain is located. The mountain is said to be a sacred ceremonial site, but that’s as much a guess as the Hopewell Indians are said to have been the inhabitants. I even read a report suggesting it was an early Gaelic fort, built by the legendary Welsh Prince Madoc. I hadn’t heard this legend before today. Berea College owns the mountain as part of its forest assets, which as it turns out, is one of the oldest managed private forests in the country. They’ve had it since 1898. This, too, was news to me. I didn’t have time to hike the trail, but I’m going back in the fall. What a gorgeous time that will surely be.
