I usually take my phone to lunch with me, but I didn’t today. That will be the last time I do that. JD Carruthers found Crystal and I at Qdoba. I knew something was wrong when he sat down. Short story: Our shero took a tumble up the back step with a cheek against the rock wall to break her fall. And because I didn’t take my phone with me, a string of calls followed until JD found me. Fortunately, my Aunt Charlene was able to get to our shero, and I met them at UK’s ER. Warning: the following photos are not for the faint of heart.

Dr. Greg Davis and his faculty and administrative colleagues have done an incredible job with training and hiring an excellent staff at that ER. There wasn’t a single PA, nurse, orderly, or doctor who wasn’t extraordinarily kind. Our shero was, of course, an excellent patient. She was jovial despite the pain, and once they gave her something for it, we had a pretty good time like we usually do in these situations. You really must make the best of it, and sometimes that means cracking jokes and taking pictures of bloody cuts.

Our shero was cleared of any broken bones, and she didn’t require stitches. But then, there was really nothing left to stitch. She was a brave shero, too, as the detached skin was cut away without anesthesia. I just kept snapping pictures until they came with the tetanus shot. I wanted no part of that, although the funny faces she made would have summed up our day perfectly. Our shero arrived back at my house about six hours after her fall. I think she’ll watch where she steps from now on. I’m just grateful she was in Lexington when it happened. Grateful, too, for all the co-workers who tried to find me, and my sweet Aunt Charlene for coming to the rescue.
